authority figures?

For instance they neglect to use the word "President" before our leader's last name.
And people wear thong shoes and skimpy outfits and sleeveless blouses in audiences with the President and the Pope.
Where did America's etiquette (respect for leaders and respect for each other) go? And how can we get back to those respectful days?

having an audience with the President or Pope means 1-10 people meet with them privately.

Etiquette has nothing to do with worthiness or trust being "earned", or with the income you have to buy clothes. Etiquette is pre-set rules for a (yes, you're right "posh" usually but all others included) society.

It's a shame these days that some younger people don't know what etiquette is or that it is still used in society.

I agree that technology has changed things (from the1980's) however everything in life comes full circle.

I asked 2 questions in one. It appears tht people don't know they are supposed to respect "the office" of the presidencyand address our President when speaking about him as "President Bush" and not simply "Bush"..

Going back to those "good old days" would require making people learn about polite behavior from an early age once again. Unfortunately, the priorities of our education system, and our value system have all changed dramatically in the last 20 years or so. I think you'll find most people born before 1980 still have "Old World" Manners, while after that, younger generations seem to reject the "Parochial" attitudes of the older generations.

Unfortunately most people seem to reject the idea of a return to a more civilized "Victorian" way of life. Our society has become so mobile, fast-paced, career-driven, and de-centralized, coupled with the idea that it doesn't matter how you accomplish something as long as you get it accomplished, that a return to an older way of life and manner of thinking and acting is probably a dream at best.

Over time people have lost their respect for our leaders. Our former leaders have done things that cause the general public to view them less than pedestal worthy. A few good examples are Nixon, Clinton, his wife Hillary, and as far as the religious side, how about what Jim Bakker did for public respect. The leaders that actually deserve our respect don't get it because of past leaders. Which I think is a shame.

Not just USA my friend - it's equally as bad here in the uk.

Manners and respect seem to be forgotten these days, to anyone.

Do we need a return to Victorian values maybe?

Our laws aren't that strict anymore , because our authority figures has proven over the decades they really aren't very worthy.

Be glad that people attend public events , because they wouldn't have that either .

There are many anti-gorverment, anti authority figures out there. That is just the reality .

Respect is earned. Leadership is action, not position. If you want my respect, EARN it. I don't care about your title.
