ok lets sum it up for you
many people say no chance of one for 30 quid more like 300 quid...... i agree that if he wants a good one 250 - 300 quid will get him a decent trainer and all the accessories..
you can get toys for 30 quid and toys they are.... great to get an interest but the best thing to do is go to your local hobby shop and find out the nearest flying club location and times they fly .. next get him along there and let him talk to the pilots... some clubs will let visitors try the trainer they have using a buddy box system ( other pilot decides when you have control).... you will find that he either loves it or hates it most likely to the love of it... if so dont buy a toy but put the money aside and save for the real thing then when you got it all take your time putting it together and JOIN A CLUB..... they will help him learn to fly and you have liability insurance ..
believe me it's harder to fly a rc plane than a real one so if you decide to spend the money take the time to train.. no training and he will crash it ( with training he will crash it but not as soon lol )
gl
and i hope you save it's a much better experience than the toys

There was a stand in the Shopping Mall adjoining Victoria Station in London a little while ago selling "flying thingies" more like a flying propeller or helicopter than a plane but radio controlled. Looked a lot of fun and I cant imagine they were more than £30.00.
You also might want to check out these sites.

You can get an Air Hogs Storm Launcher vehicle that can be used on the water, on land, or in the air for about $60 US, which is in the ballpark of 30 quid, isn't it?
They are available from most toy or RC sites. Look for a video of these things, they are super cool. A drawback it that they are not high-quality construction (you get what you pay for), and the learning curve may be a bit steep.
If this helps, a best answer would be greatly appreciated.

you cant buy a plane with that! and if you buy one cheap its going to break right when it hits the GROUND!
So if your going to buy a plane, its gotta be a real plane!!!!
I suggest a $100 plane at smith bothers hobbie store for good longlasting planes, because I buy planes there and I still have them! from 2001. even the wood planes work for a long time.
its at valleybest.com then search smith brothers.

Flying Radio Controlled planes is a hobby and not something you can just go and do. He needs to be taught how to fly, or he WILL crah it within 5 mins. You would need something like 300 pounds to get started. I recommend he joins his local club.

It costs hundreds. Such an expensive gift is inappropriate and excessively needy on your part. Let his parents buy him the plane and then find one small accessory to go with it for your 30 pounds.

Trust me, this is the REAL DEAL!
A little out of your budget, but it's gotta be worth it.
This is the creme, de la creme, de la creme of Remote Controlled Aeroplanes.
I have seventeen myself.. and they are truly magnificent models.
