I had a midwife with my first child and one of both (from the same office) with my second. In my opinion the doctor starts with "What symptoms are you having? Any problems?" Whereas the midwife is usually "How are you feeling? How are things going at home" I saw both for the comfort of knowing an ob/gyn and having the compassion of a midwife.
Oh and midwifes dont have more knowledge than the ob/gyn... if there are any major complications they usually have to turn you over to the doctor...
anyway I loved them both but I would choose a midwife again in future pregnancies...
to the person that wrote above: They let you have tylenol... they give you a list of medications that are safe for pregnanct... and now days they have midwife school, so stop acting like it is just some chick who decided today she would deliver a baby... they have training.

I had a midwife and home births for all three of my children and the care was impeccable. I was in labor for 18 hours with my first son and my midwife was by my side the entire time. Nowhere will you find a doctor that will do that. Midwifes have a much lower rate for pain medications because they show you how to handle Labor naturally. I had very little pain with my second and third babies. They also have a much lower rate for infant death and injury.

I decided to pick a doctor this time because I already have 2 children and I know the drill. A midwife is more tuned to your pregnancy and they give you advise and kind of nature you more like a mother would. I picked a doctor because I don't need to be told what I need to eat and so on. Straight in for appointments and straight out. The doctors check for everything just like the midwife.

I believe that having both in your corner during pregnancy is of benefit. A doctor has the medical knowledge and experience a midwife may be missing. However, a doctor may not be fully equipped to handle the more sensitive issues you may face. In that case, a midwife may be able to give you a more holistic view of pregnancy.
I believe one should take whatever route or combination of routes that makes her feel most comfortable and well taken care of during the pregnancy.

Midwifes are great for babies, but if something should go wrong in delivery, they are NOT equipped to take care of a mother properly. Some hospitals have midwifes on staff, and if you want a midwife, that is your best bet. I know a lot of mothers say their only concern is their baby, which is all well and good, but if you aren't there to take care of him/her because you were harmed in child birth and the Midwife could not care for you, it sort of takes away from the selfless act.
You never know if something is going to go wrong, so be careful whatever you decide.

Midwife! Most definately! Most doctors are men for a start so they haven't got a clue what it is like to have a baby. Midwives have often had a child of their own and even if they haven't they have had specific training.

I always had Dr's but midwives weren't as common in my day. Before my time, when people had babies at home mid wives were some local women . But now they are using them more often and they do an awesome job. Most are connected to your Dr office anyway, and they make it a point to really get to know the person, Dr are just too busy.

A co-worker is seeing a midwife and she was told absolutely no coffee (Which recent studies have shown that 2-3, 8oz cups are completely safe), no Tylenol, nothing for allergies (Which most OBs will tell you that you can take Claritin) They have no medical school training so they really have no idea what is safe for pregnant women to take. I would not trust my baby's life to someone that has no medical school training.
