Don't worry. A few beers does not cause the kind of damage that they worry about with alcohol use - it takes a lot more than that! Same with smoking.
As long as you have quit now, your baby will be fine.

Keri is a royal b*tch!! I didn't know I was pregnant until I was almost 16 weeks, and it was because I actually had some bleeding that I *thought* was my period (obviously not, in retrospect...) Though I never smoked, I did drink on the occassion. My body was obviously telling me not to, or to take it easy because I used to be able to throw back 6 cocktails a night no problem, and once I got pregnant, I didn't have the desire to drink more than one or two. However, I had probably three drinks or fewer for a 15 week period, and was completely open with my Doc once I found out I was pregnant. She told me not to worry, that it's really chronic, serious alcohol abusers who have children who suffer from the effects of fetal alcohol. Of course there's that little chance that has still haunted me (im 26 weeks) but what is done is done. Take the best care for yourself know, and know that you're human! I'm sure everything is fine. I wish you the best!

First, congratulations! I have three boys and let me tell you, you will never know what love is, truly, until you look at the baby for the first time and see his/her big eyes staring back at you. It is truly life changing.
Second, most likely you haven't done any damage. There is always a chance. The important thing is that you stopped. Start your prenatal care, get on the vitamines. If you want to start early on a vitamin regimine, start with Flinstones (yes, Flinstones, our OB told my wife to take Flinstones when she was getting sick with the horse pill sized vitamines.)
Do everything in your power NOW to make sure the baby is healthy. You can't change what you've done in the past, don't stress yourself about it. (Stress will do more to damage the baby than 12 weeks of Cigs and drinks, but not more than 9 months of them.)
Third, do not go back to that lifestyle after the baby is born. You'll be a better mom longer if you stay away from the bad habits.
Anyway, good luck with the pregnancy and God Bless you and your husband!

Nature has a great way of looking out for it's own survival !!! The growing baby is more protected in the first trimester than in the latter two of the pregnancy, therefore allowing the mother's "ignorance" to not be a facet in the baby's growth. Hope this makes sense. Relax and look after yourself well .. your little will be fine if you take very good care from now. No more beers or ciggies !!!!!!!

It is VERY important that you advise your doctor of your "past" life. As for the drinking, alcohol fetal syndrome is more common in women who drink in access (like a case a beer a day) . Not to have drank at all would have been best, but I dont feel a couple beers here and there is a huge issue. at 12 weeks, the baby is very small, about the width of your finger, my advice is, to talk to your doc about ALL of your concerns, they cant repeat any of it to ANYONE. As for the smoking, I know women who have smoked all through their pregnancies with no problems with the child. However, you really shouldnt smoke for more than a few reason which include, low baby birth weight, risk of lung infections in child, low immune system in baby, also, god forbid, if you had to go under anesthesia, with yourself smoking, it will prolong how it take for you to come out of it. So Stop now. :)

Girl, You know how many people smoke and drink and they find out they are pregnant. It's a very small chance you effected your baby. Every person who smokes and drinks than find out they are pregnant and stop there babies are fine. The world would have a lot of people who are screwed up if every child was affected by alcohol when there mother drink while pregnant. Relax.

first of all Congrats! Second, the baby will be fine. You are not the first woman, nor will you be the last who has drank and smoked without knowing they are pregnant. The important thing is that you have stopped now. I am sure that you will have a healthy baby in a few months.

I didn't find out I was pregnant until I was 12 weeks too. No symptoms at all. There shouldn't be a problem because you have stopped. Just remember to take your vitamins and stuff. Plus ask your doctor about taking Folic Acid supplement (Although it may be too late now-It helps the brain and spinal cord develop, highly recommended to take if you're thinking about getting pregnant.)

don't worry about it. My Friend smoked and drank during her first month of pregnancy because she didn't know she was pregnant. Her kid turned out fine. He's now a healthy 5 yr old kid. Just mention your habits of smoking and drinking to your OB/midwife.
