okay, i just got my brothers used Dell computer. he wiped everything off of it, then reinstalled windows xp and microsoft office.

now the screen resolution is , well, everything is big. not sure if that means the res is small or large. but when i go to control panel, display, settings, it WILL NOT let me change the screen resolution, it is set all the way to the left. also the color quality is set at 16 bit, and there are no other options.

also under control panel, sounds and audio devices, and then after clicking on the hardware tab, it says everything is working properly, when that is not the case. i tried playing a cd on windows media player and it says the sound card is not active or something like that. im pretty sure its there, what is going on i hate these things.

You're just missing the video and sound drivers for the specific hardware on this Dell.

The Windows XP installation CD doesn't have them, so your system is currently on generic VGA settings, which gives you that extra-large appearance (640x480) It probably doesn't recognize your sound or network cards at all.

The easiest solution is to have your brother search for the driver CD which came with that computer. Just pop it in and install.

If he can't find it, go to Dell's website and download the video/sound/network drivers (you might need to this this from another computer, then burn a CD containing those files)

Good luck!

you've the 512 mb card for PCI? you'll be waiting to place it in the slot, boot, and permit it deploy. If it does no longer, use the upload hardware wizard in the administration panel to place in it. If that would not artwork pass to the producer's website and acquire the nicely suited driving force on your working equipment. Switching the video enter in the bios could take care of it without disabling the onboard video. Boot with the onboard, load the drivers. swap the video enter and reboot.

sounds like none of the drivers are actually installed.

There should be another Dell CD that should be labled drivers disk or something..
install that..

OR..go search dell.com for your specific model and download any video and audio drivers there..
that should solve your problems..

Or your brother gave you a totally busted PC..
