Hands down the Beatles, they introduced the world to modern day thoughtful lyrics. Bands are still trying to catch up to what they were doing 40 some years ago. No one did it better and Im guessing no one will ever do it better.

I agree with The Beatles. I guess I'd say Death Cab for Cutie and Dashboard Confessional are the modern bands with the best lyrics. They have a lot of emotion and meaning in them.
It's really hard to pick, though, because a lot of lyrics are good for different reasons.

The Cure, hands down, writes the best songs- the lyrics, the music, and the performance is untouchable. And they've been doing it for almost 30 years. No other band has the ability to evoke emotions with music the way they do. "Desintigration' is still one of the best, darkest, most emotional albums I have ever heard. "Wish" is right behind it.
