Being stressed and not wanting to be at work can make you focus more on what's bothering you. It's unfair that she left like that without true permission. Carry some Motrin or Advil around the office in case this ever pops up again. 600mg of Mortin (3 regular Ibuprofren/Advil/Motrin) is what is often prescribed to my patients for severe cramps.

Stress can definately make menstrual cramps worse because it is a normal stress reaction. Stress can magnify the perception of pain and also causes muscle cramps and tightness. It can also amplify the other symptoms associated with a period.
However I don't feel that it is a good excuse to use constantly at work. If she is having painful periods she needs to see her doctor for a possible diagnosis of endometriosis or many other possibilities and get on the correct therapy for it. A period is something that happens to us all every month and we just have to deal with it, it's not an excuse to stop daily functioning.
You're a good boss for caring enough to even research it but just tell her to take care of the problem so that it doesn't affect her work and then she won't have to depend on people being understanding.

Yes, Stomach cramps are notoriously caused by stress. Stress causes problems with many of the bodies systems and one is Peristalsis. [the muscle spasms used in the gut to push food forward through your body.] One common condition involving cramps that is worsened by stress and some say caused by it is IBS [Irritable Bowel Syndrome] The symptoms vary a lot. But essentially most sufferers get cramps. Some cramps can be caused by medication too. So check your medication information leaflet [if any] or talk to your Doctor or Pharmacist.

Stressed can cause many problems for different people. It causes me headaches. I had a boss that told me that I couldn't leave. I went to the doctor and got a note.I left that day and didn't care. The next day, he said that he was sorry. Now, that lady shouldn't have lied but its over and done with. Just talk to her about that.

I believe so. Whenever energy or your body is out of balance, things do hurt more. Tell her to take birth control or to seek out alternative healing methods. When I was in school, I used to keel over because the cramps were so bad. I find drinking coke helps as well

definately...maybe she has endometrioses...the cramps could be severe enough for her not being able to move around too much even...when my cramps are really bad, i don't even attend college...maybeu could suggest to her to get a check up at the gynae and then give u a copy of the report so u'll know she's not lying and maybe u could give her days off when she's on her menses.

Of course, it IS possible that she used this to get off work.....on the other hand, I have found that when I have pain, ANYWHERE, it becomes worse with stress.
