It happened this morning on my way to work, I was going to pass a car and I did exactly as explained in the question. Is this bad for the motor? I know this is a dumb question but I would appreciate intelligent answers.

Hard to tell the way you've explained it, but perhaps you hit the gas pedal hard enough that it down shifted for more power which would tend to get noisy. And being in a lower gear, it wouldn't accelerate as fast as normal.

You didn't say if this was a automatic transmission or a manual shift. If it is a manual shift is the engine revving up but the car not accelerating? If so than you have a clutch slipping on you and need a new one fitted. With a Automatic the same conditions could be a torque converter or the bands slipping internally. You would have to take it to a specialist to get this taken care of.

Knowing the make/model/year would help. I second the catalytic converter. It could also be your air filter is dirty, your fuel injectors or bad gas. Before you take it to a mechanic, check and change your air filter and get some fuel injector cleaner. It's all cheap and easy to do. Take it easy until you figure out the problem. It doesn't sound like you have a bad motor right now, but if you keep driving like that it will go eventually.
Good luck.

If it is a newer car have the catalytic converter checked. It also might be in the trany area. Without more info I can not tell you for sure.

What kind of car do you have? Performance will deteriorate with time. Keep those injectors clean and get a tune up.

if its a stick, then maybe the clutch is slipping and if its automatic, the tranny might be slipping.
