My political philosophy from university, long rest his soul... He taught us how to think, not what to think. Brilliant.

One of my heroes, maybe the one I most admire is the late Pope John Paul 2.Like him or not he was a remarkable man. Before he became Pope he was a multi-facetted renaissance man - an accomplished philosopher and theologian, an athlete, a playwright, a poet, a leader and a paternal figure to young people whom they called 'Uncle'. He was a priest who rose through the ranks quickly, a figure who opposed Nazism then communism and grew up associating with Jewish friends.

As Pope he was the great communicator, the world traveller, the politician who helped bring about the fall of communism in his native poland and then in eastern and central europe. He was also the writing Pope which is often overlooked and publshed many important encyclicals, letters, homilies as well as books for the ordinary man notably 'Crossing the Threshold of Hope' which addresses many difficult issues.

He was also the unyielding conservative on social and sexual issues and on the position of women in the Church. This stance made him unpopular with many and made him seem out of step with the modern world. All I would say is that he stuck to his convictions and didn't take the popular or the modern path for which he deserves some credit - he wasn't a relativist.Anyway, you can't accuse the Pope of being too catholic and catholics believe that he is infallible on matters of doctrine so the buck stops with him.

Despite this he did reach out to other religions such as the gathering of world faiths at Assissi, he apologised to the Jews on behalf of the church for past wrongs and he prayed in a mosque. He really was the 'good and faithful servant' that jesus talks about in the gospel.May he rest in peace.

Erin Andrews, a sideline reporter for ESPN. She came to visit my college a few months ago and she was really inspirational, because I want a career similar to hers when I graduate. She was very down to earth and honest, and gave great advice. She is also generous because it was her idea to take time out of her busy schedule to fly to Florida and speak with students. She overcame a lot of rejection in her career, and now she is extremely successful!

My Brother. He cared a lot about others. He served in Vietnam with the Australian army.
When he was dying, at a young age, he was still concerned about others.

Please no-one say David Beckham, etc. They are not hero's. If you want a sporting hero look at Lance Armstrong. An inspiring sportsman if ever there was one.
