Your boss may have picked the card based on what he knows of your colleague's beliefs. For some people, it is cheering to receive an inspirational religious card. Signing a card with a religious 'theme' is not the same as making a religious statement, just as signing a card picturing a talking dog does not mean you are Dr Dolittle. If you feel uncomfortable about something similar happening in the future, you could have a private word with your boss, but you do risk being excluded from future workplace 'community' events such as card signings. If that suits you (and it does suit many people so you would not be alone in that), then go for it. If you'd prefer to just wish your colleague well, sign the card and don't feel it makes you appear something you're not. All it does is add your good wishes to that of others! Good luck :-)

It might not be the card you would have picked but its the polite thing to do to sign it. Im sure she will appreciate the fact that everybody took the time to sign the card for her and it might comfort her to know that she has a lot of great friends at work that can help her through this tough time.
If you still feel uncomfortable signing a religious card, go buy one more to your suiting and have all of her closest coworkers sign it along with your name.

It was only a card to cheer a friend. I would have signed it and not given it a second thought. You did the right thing by signing it. Saved a hard time from your boss, fellow coworkers, and let your friend know that you are part of the group who thinks very highly of him or her and care a lot about them.
Enjoy your day!

I would of signed the card even though I dont believe in god or any religion. I would of signed it out of respect. Now if you didnt care one bit about the nurse who lost her father than you are a hypocrite.

This isn't about YOOOOUUUU! This is about an employee, and showing your sympathies for her loss. And showing that you care for HEERRRRR.
I personally don't read the messages on card that get passed around the office. I ask whats this for and if I sign an appropriate message or none at all.

Unfortunately it's your boss's company and his/her idea. If you don't like it you can quit. Sorry if that sounds harsh, it wasn't meant to be. Or if you'd like, you can get her a gift from you alone. Just pass the card up, whose going to know you didn't sign it? Good luck.

The card was for the co-worker...not you. Get over yourself. If you didn't want to sign a card aimed at comforting or cheering up a co-worker you should have had the testicular fortitude to refuse!

Just sign your name and then maybe get your own personal card for the person........it's not an indication of your religious beliefs....it's just a nice card.........
