My engine in my 1978 Toyota Landcruiser FJ-40 is leaking oil pretty fast. What might be the reason behind this and what can I do to stop it?

Most toyota engines have an external oil pump and if it is leaking really fast when the engine is running it means only one thing the oil pumps seals gave out and it will get worse My recommation is do not use it anymore and drive another car to get the new oil seals and fix it --it happened to me in my 89 toyota and I ignored it and the motor locked up on me why?? the oil pumps seal failed and pumped the entire crankcase dry of oil to outside the motor -- i found a long strip of oil spillage for about 1/2 mile it ran for about 10 miles before the engine locked up(no oil left in the motor)

if its leaking that bad, then its probably the rear main seal,or you blown a oil pan gasket.either way,you have to drop the pan.if its the rear main, then just take off the last bearing cap and half the seal is in there and take a thin screwdriver and drive the other half out above the crank.its best if you can get the rubber seal.make sure the lip on the seal faces the front of the motor and before you install the seal, put some oil on it,so you wont have a dry start up,and put some rtv sealer on both ends of the cap and torque the bearing cap to specs.put a new gasket on it and change the oil and your good to go.good luck, hope this helps you.

It could be anything from a cracked oil pan, to a bad gasket, to a faulty oil filter. You need to find where the oil is leaking, and then determine why. The first step is to clean the engine, either with a steam cleaner, or some chemical cleaner like "gunk". When the engine is clean, you will be able to see where oil is leaking, and trace the source!!
