Do they think the goverment is made up of more perfect people, with better knowlege of whats good for everyone else?

Military, police department, fire department, department of sanitation, your town/city water, and the post office are known as "infrastructure" in a free society. The govenment is paid to do those services, it's not a task forced onto society because the government knows best what the people should do.

The essence of socialism is that it is a government run by the working class that responds to the needs and wants of society rather than government run by a wealthy elite that responds to the insatiable greed of the capitalist.

True socialism is a democracy where the public decides the way forward. Capitalism constantly must undermine democracy since it is an affront to the majority of the population. The capitalist gets richer and richer when labor works harder and harder for less and less. Additionally, the success of capitalism must seek expansion through military adventures. The costs of those adventures always fall upon the underclass while the spoils go to the wealthy elite.

Many people in the U.S. continue to confuse Stallinism with socialism. Stalinism was the counter-revolution. It was Stalin who imprisoned and executed the leaders of the Bolshevik Revolution -- including Trotsky himself. Trotsky wrote extensively about Stalinism in "The Revolution Betrayed," which is available to be read on the Internet

No.

True socialism requires direct democracy. The gov't isnt better at running the people's lives, the gov't is the people-to an extent not yet seen in the world on a large scale.

Think like the Amish, early African triba councils, or even the Smurfs (though theyre closer to Commies).

Smaller societies are ideal, or at least much stronger local gov'ts-this allows more control for the people.

"So I guess you're for getting rid of the military, police department, fire department, department of sanitation, your town/city water, the post office, etc.? Those are all socialist institutions."

QFT

What I wonder is why people like the asker have such a horribly wrong idea of socialism is. I really don't understand why you think it is a bad thing to pool resources and help those in need. "Those in need" can include everyone (we all need roads and health care) or a few (only some people need to be kept in a mental institution their whole life).

Government is 'supposed' to be an extension of the people... a force to achieve the will of the people.

In the U.S., it isn't. Americans don't need "less" government. They need to revamp their system so that government plays the role it's supposed to play.

Right now, government is an extension of big business, and that's corrupt... no matter what it's size. And actually... by reducing the mandate of Government, you allow it to focus more fully on satisfying it's masters; ...corporate America.

I am truly scared at the lack of support for the premise of this question.

The notion that the idividual (not the goverment) is the catalyst for good in society is so fundemental and basic.

Henry Ford was not inspired by the government to develop the Automobile industry.
The Wright brothers didnt have govermental gun to their heads either.
Edison wasn't locked in a room till he came up with the lightbulb

It's staggering to me how few really realize that it's the PEOPLE, not the goverment that our responsible for our successes

Probably because the government steals 1/3 of their check and they feel they should get something for such a price.

They are all run as not for profit institutions by your federal, state, or local gov't. That infrastructure is still socialist in nature. Otherwise we would be have a private fire department. Think about it.

Our ruling class thinks they're the only ones who know what's best for us poor dumb peasants. Only an elitist or a greedy slug can be a socialist -- that's why democracies evolve to socialist states, and why our country was set up as a Republic.

...and that's why our rulers always call it a "democracy."

It's called "Charity" and it's completely voluntary and not compusory as is Socialism.

I can provide for myself, thanks!

If Socialism is so great, why does it continually fail when it is tried?

What better way for absolute power and control? Force people to become dependent upon the government, share the wealth, make us all 'equal' ,and rob the minds of those who are above average because, you have now taken away all incentive.

That's the plan!
