The British Empire at its peak in the late 19th Century was by far the largest Empire in recorded history. It included the second largest country in the world (Canada) the fifth largest (Australia) as well as India, huge chunks of Africa, plus areas in the Caribbean, Central and South America, Southeast Asia and many Pacific Islands including New Zealand.

At 14.2 million square miles, the British empire was the largest.
At 12 million square miles, the Mongol empire was the largest contiguous land empire
In terms of wealth and percentage of the world's wealth, the hands down winner is the American Empire, owning 35% of the World GDP in 1945, and having 1.6 Trillion dollars in GDP in 1944.

The British for Land Mass compared to the total surface area of the world, but biggest continual land space, would be the Mongols, China to Mid Europe, thats a lot of land.

I'd think the catholic empire or rather the empire controlled by the vatican, it invaded nearly every country in the world, due to the crusades, it put into power ruling governments, officials, legal systems and controlled the economy of every country it invaded

Thanks to technology in transportation, it would be the British Empire - followed rather closely by the Mongols under Genghis Khan who did it on horseback.
