Sadly for the woman concerned, who was blandishing something a very realistic replica weapon. I understand that she refused to drop it. It's OK to expect a policeman to confront an armed person and get killed himself and we can all say what a wonderful brave man/woman he was and forget about them. It's not about rights it's about survival I for one am not prepared to have a man take that risk in what is a civilian occupation. The woman had ample opportunity to drop her weapon. It is only after the event that it is discovered to be a replica. Perhaps the qyuestioner would have like to have taken the matter on next time there is such an incident

I don't know if it was right or not, that is why they investigate all police shootings here in the UK. When the findings come out, I will be more informed as to be able to give you an answer. I am guessing that it was the right thing to do. Thankfully, it is very rare that the police make mistakes when it comes to shootings in this country, with the obvious exception of the poor Brazillian guy the other year.

Bit early to make a considered judgement at the moment, but from what the newspapers say, this woman had a gun which whilst not a firearm had the appearance of a real weapon...local people say they heard warnings given..if the lady chose not to take any notice and pointed the 'gun' as though to use it against the Police, then I'm afraid she paid the ultimate price, and the Police Officer was justified to shoot.

Harsh but fair.
If in the UK you give the impression to an armed police officer that you have a gun and intend to use it then you have only yourself to blame.
And yes they do shoot to kill.
Even as a young sailor training on the old SLR rifle we were taught to put holes in the chest and head. You don't "shoot it out of their hand, or shoot them in the leg; this is real life not Hollywood.
This is price you pay for not having a fully armed police force, and (despite the best efforts of the inner city gangs) the freedom to live in a gun free society.

Apparently, this woman was a martial arts expert too and was waving this gun around wildly.
The police won't take any chances in a situation like that, they want to get home in one piece and protect any members of the public that are passing by.
Perhaps they could have wounded her, but then she might have opened fire back and it could have been a real bloodbath.

I am always amazed at the number of 'Answers' correspondents who are witnesses to these events. I hope you have all volunteered your names and addresses to the Independent Police Complaints Commission as that will help them enormously. I am sure they will be gratified that 'Northern Lad' has such a positive opinion.

im not entirely sure of the exact situation but put it this way if i was infront of someone with a gun and i had a gun id shoot them before they got me. also if the police cant control these gun owning maniacs they are just going to run riots all over the uk. if everyone who has a gun shot themselves it would solve a lot of problems

First, a woman can kill you just as dead with a gun than a man can.
Police can use deadly force to stop themselves or innocent bystanders from being killed.
Police are trained not to shoot to wound, but to shoot to kill. If they feel the threat is so severe that they need to shoot, they will do their best to kill you.
All the woman needed to do was to stop being a threat, drop the gun, and surrender. She would be alive now.

A ball bearing firing gun is a projectile weapon and if you are going to point one at armed police officers they aren't going to consider your safety above that of their own.
My only conclusion is that the woman discovered, either by accident or by forethought, a novel method of suicide.
