I rent from my parents at a reduced rate and whenever anything goes wrong (EG taps sieze up) she throws the fact that im on a reduced rent back in my face and says she will put the rent up. The tile grout in the bath went last yr and she asked me for half the repair charge. I dont have a copy of my tenancy but i dont believe it was detailed to include anything like that. I dont expect I have a leg to stand on do I?

As a parent who rents to his son, I expect that he will do, or help pay for any normal repairs. He gets a very reduced rate, approximately one third of what the place is worth.

Normally, the landlord pays for maintenance, unless it is caused by the tenant. Since you rent from your parents, and you likely will not file a complaint against them, your recourse is to either pay half of the bill, or move out. The next tenant will be able to enforce the landlord to make repairs. Actually you could enforce the landlord to make repairs, but the bad blood created by this with your family might not be worth it.

Well, you could always push Mom to pay for these repairs, since the problems you are describing are landlord responsbility. However, be prepared for Mom to raise the rent on you. If you truly ARE getting a below market rate from Mom, quit your bitching and give in to some of these demands, as long as they are reasonable.

Good, then start fixing things. If they are discounting the rent to you, you should expect to help keep the establishment as it was when you first began renting. Especially if they are going to leave the money or this investment to you when they pass. It's like taking care of your own retirement.

This is why I don't do anything involving money or responsibilities with my family.. :)
