The question is how much has science fiction INFLUENCED scientists, not how many scientific discoveries are a direct result of sci fi. Nearly all of science today was influenced by science fiction thinking, stories and writers. You can go back to H G Wells or Jules Vern or even back to Leonardo De Vinci and see how nearly all our modern scientific inventions were forseen many many years ago. My favorite sci fi right now is the new Battlestar Galactica. Beings like the Cylons are what we will be dealing with in the near future!

Sci Fi has not lead to any basic scientific discoveries, but it has opened people's minds to various possibilities and envisioned things before they happen. For example, Arthur C Clarke is widely credited with having foreseen geosynchronous satellites long before satellites were first launched.

Science fiction writers are sometimes very good at writing popular science, too. Isaac Asimov was an excellent popular science writer as well as a pretty good Sci Fi writer. He created the "Laws of Robotics" which are regularly quoted by technologists working in robotics.

It is important as entertainment and I suppose any unproven scientific idea is a form of science fiction until it is proven. My favourite is, 2001, a space odessy.

Sci-fi has little to do with scientific advancement. I have never seen Isaac Asimov cited in a physics paper.
