Why when I fill up it goes beyond the full mark.
Then when it is at the halfway mark it usually reads 200 miles ( I always reset the trip meter with each fill)
then when I get gasoline next usually at 1/4 tank it isn't anywhere near a reading of 300.

Because I think the main purpose of the gauge is to tell you when you're going to run out, not to give you the most accurate reading of gas in the tank. You can fill past F, you can drive past E.

I remember hearing that Chrysler at one point in the 70's came out with a real precise gas gauge. And as soon as the needle hit E the car died on the spot. People were pissed because they were so used to driving past E and the company had to switch back to the old style gauges.

People try to associate gas gauge with real world mileage traveled. It is there just to keep you from running out. My mileage counter/ miles traveled is only somewhat better.. I traveled 600 miles to south Texas from Fort Worth and beat the mileage indicator YEA! averaging 75mph on my way down Friday 24 miles a gallon and Sunday in my way back more traffic 65 mph, 26 miles a gallon. I think the miles to empty are averaged out of the EPA estimated fuel economy.

not prefected, you could have more gas at a 1/4 than at a 1/2
