To become a doctor in the US you must graduate from an accredited Medical College after you graduate from regular college. The competition to get into med school is extremely tough. In some famous schools only 1 in 100 of the qualified applicants is admitted. By "qualified" it means that you took a lot of required courses in college when you were working on your BA or BS degree. You got A's and then took the difficult MCAT tests (like SATs only harder) and did very well, and at the end of your BS or BA you earned the recommendation of the faculty of your college. There are a lot of disappointed people who wanted to be doctors and couldnt make the grade because they failed on one of these items.

The courses you take when you are in college preparing to apply to med school are difficult, especially chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry. The sequence of courses is based on the requirements for application of the med schools. Kids who are in this sequence are listed as "premed." In most schools it is not a major - you have to pick some other subject such as biology, chemistry or math as your major.
