I'm a metallurgist. And, I do not dig under the ground for metal ores. A person with this job would be called an "Underground Hard Rock Miner" and less commonly called a “Hard Rock Underground Miner."
Hard Rock (or hardrock) mining is done for mining of metal containing ores vs. mining for softer minerals like coal.
The Department of Labor (DOL) recognizes two classifications of miners: Underground and Surface. The two types of mining present different environments, hazards, and mining equipment.

He is a 'Miner' or 'Mines worker'. A pitiable job. He signs and
goes in the mine for the work through the shaft and it is his
day when he comes out, signs again and joins his family.

A 'miner'.
Miners also pan for gold.
Mining can be lucrative, and a way of life.
