Clive Barker. He weaves such outrageous worlds in his stories and yet I don't spend my whole visits there thinking of how absurd the place is or how crazy the characters are. He makes the most bizarre seem so real. He will scare the hell out of you while writing with such beauty it makes your heart ache. He is truly an artist with the written word. I just adore him so much.
I also love Stephen King for his all-around story-telling skills and imagination and the ease with which you can sink into his stories.
I love Neil Gaiman and I haven't figured out why exactly because some of his stuff feels like I have to plod through it but I'm always left feeling so damn satisifed and yearning for something more.
I love Bentley Little for his sheer audacity. Who the hell writes about an insurance salesman from hell? Or a Walmartesque store that you better hope never finds cause to fire you? Or a resort of doom? Or a homeowners association filled with psychos? I mean, he's just as silly as you can get but he does it SO WELL! I could read his stuff every single day. He cannot write quickly enough for me!
I love Terry Pratchett because he's silly, Mark Twain because he's hilarious and knew his audience (humans!) and just generally was amazing, Clifford D. Simak for his vision, Henry Kuttner for the same, and so, so many more!
I'm surprised you didn't share with us YOUR favorite authors and why...

If you like reading non-fiction, about what goes on nowadays - I recommend these two -
1) "Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader"
written by Bradley K. Martin
2) "Rogue Regime"
written by Jasper Becker
These two well-written books give an insight about the North Korean Government.
Fiction?
Try all the books written by Clive Cussler.
The hero is Dirk Pitt, with his sidekick Al Giordino. These are well-written.

East of Eden or Of Mice and Men would be my favorite book. Obviously, my favorite author is John Steinbeck. He was able to describe places and people so vividly, I was able to see them and, when it comes to his people, know them. I mourned Sam Hamilton in East of Eden and I really felt sorry for George and Lenny. It's important that, In Of Mice and Men, George's last name was Milton, and the poet Milton wrote "Paradise Lost" which perfectly describes the lives of everyone in the book.

Stephen King. Though I have MANY favorites, I guess he tops the list. His style can be so varied. He'll gross you out in one book (Maximum Overdrive, The Mangler), and make you cry (The Green Mile, Stand By Me), and scare you half to death (Salem's Lot, It)
I'm talking about his books. When they make a movie from one of his books, they NEVER live up to the novel.
Mr. King absolutely rules!!!

I don't have a particular author that I will read all their books.. If I pick up a book and it looks interesting, then I will buy it, or borrow it from the library.

Stephanie Meyer cuz of her Twilight series! It's so awesome! I love how the love of a vampire and a human can be so forbidden and not at the same time! The adventure she puts the main characters in are just wonderful! I love it and can't wait til Eclipse comes out!

Harper Lee when she wrote To Kill a Mockingbird. Her prose is so beautiful. It's hard to comprehend, but there is a clarity in her words. The description is still very limited. I love Atticus Finch. And Boo Radley. Ahhhh.
