Check out www.stutteringhelp.org and look under "referrals" for a list of speech therapists who specialize in treating stuttering. Some insurance programs will cover the treatments. I don't know exactly what is done, but one of my uncles who stuttered went to a therapist at the same time that he was working through the book "Self Therapy for the Stutterer" and did really well at overcoming his speech problem. There are many techniques that speech therapists use and they are different with different speech problems. Some local hospitals also have speech therapy in the same department as physical therapy.

I've always found a lisp to be an attractive quality in a woman.

Modern speech pathologists and speech therapists have excellent success with patients these days, even with people who stutter. There are quick fixes for stuttering around that can be learned, not liked by the professionals because it does not tackle the core of the problem, but the patient doesn't care as long as it works. These are usually for children though. I can't remember off hand the names of these, just that they were on a current affairs program I saw. Otherwise, look at the link, they have info you can download.

You can find a Speech Therapist (Speech Language Pathologist), by visiting the national organization for Speech Language Pathologist's website: asha.org

Here is the link to the "find a professional" section: http://asha.org/findpro/

You may also find SLPs working in most schools, as well as in hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes. You may be able to find some that do private practice in your telephone book as well.

In order to determine your prognosis for benefit from speech therapy, you would have to be evaluated.

The therapist may look at factors such as how long the issue has been in place, when it occurred, why it occurred, etc. They may also try a few therapy techniques with you on the spot.
