The intelligentsia would have given him a right panning but the masses, now and then, would still have lapped him up. He would also have to act like a total dickwad all of the time though in order to maintain the public's interest. Illiteracy and a lack of functioning brain cells never held anyone back; in fact they have a better chance of receiving rewards for their (lack of) effort, the truly gifted have to wait until they are dead to be appreciated (generally).

Homer, the author of "The Illiad" and the "The Odyssey" was illiterate.
"Nothing is known about Homer's identity or life, and in fact there is no concrete evidence that he existed. Tradition holds that he was blind, and the island of Chios and various Ionian cities claim to be his birthplace" Although it's possible that "The Illiad" and the "The Odyssey" were actually written by a different blind poet named Homer who was from Chios or some other Ionian city.

if he had been illiterate, he wouldn't have written anything. Therefore he would never have been known.
