Many people say Basil Rathbone, but for me the best Holmes was Jeremy Brett. Holmes was mad...like a lot of geniuses. He was manically depressed when he no cases, and took to injecting cocaine. When he had a case he was full of life, his knowledge and interest were esoteric to say the least (Watson tried documenting them). Brett captured that, he looks like Holmes (in the earlier episodes) he was brilliant. Who do you think was the best and why?

Basil Rathbone is excellent, but his performance is drastically harmed by Nigel Bruce, who quite frankly sucks as Watson. Watson doesn't just bumble around everywhere---he does have half a brain!! Jeremy Brett is considered the best all-around Holmes. I agree. However, the best all-around FILM is the most recent one, with Rupert Everett and Ian Hart. It's called "The Case of the Silk Stocking." You honestly can't tell it's made for TV. See it!

Jeremy Brett "was" Sherlock Holmes

...Basil Rathbone was believable and captured the character, but was not infused with the characters very essence...Jeremy Brett did so....perhaps because Jeremy Brett was manically depressed himself, suffered from Bipolar disorder and was only truly elated when he was working....and was brilliant in this role.
In the "later" episodes, he was ailing and it showed on screen, physically, but not in character...JB still gave it his "all" till the end.

you could feel his emotions as he played through them on screen, from anger to delight.
also that violin he played inspired me to buy a violin and play(still working on that).
I have a wide collection of him playing Sherlock homes on DVD,I'd love to get the one DVD of his "the hounds of the baskerville"it's my favourite Sherlock Holmes story.
he was brilliant.a genius.
