The tail seems to move for a while and gives the lizard a chance to get away from its predator. I suppose its the same sort of thing like a chicken when its decapitated, the chicken runs around for a good while before dying. It must be the nerves in the tail that take a while to die off, giving the lizard a bit of time to do a runner!!

The main predatory defense of a lizard if the tail is injured by a predator is the tail will fall off and the lizard can run away. The tails nerves however, will still be signaling to the muscles to move because of the pain in the nerves. This will hopefully distract the predator when they escape.

Lizards drop their tail when they are threatened by predators. The dropped tail end continues to move to provide a distraction to the predator that allows the lizard a chance to escape.

its a defence thing as the preditor will go after the jumping tail and the lizard will have some time to run and hide.
but what actulie causes it, i think it may have something to do with nurves in the tail.
