1. a belief or notion, not based on reason or knowledge, in or of the ominous significance of a particular thing, circumstance, occurrence, proceeding, or the like.

2. An irrational belief that an object, action, or circumstance not logically related to a course of events influences its outcome.

For example: If a solid black cat walks out in front of you it brings bad luck or if you break a mirror it will bring 7 years of bad luck.

It is believing that something may happen as a result of something else. For example. If a black cat crosses your path you will have bad luck. In reality, nothing bad could really happen to you just because a black cat walks across the path you were about to walk along. Why a black cat? Why doesn't apply to white cats? It is just superstition created by someone long ago and out of fear the current population continues the superstition....just in case it comes true.

A superstition is the belief that events are influenced by specific behaviors, without having a causal relationship.
Example:
Roman officer and encyclopedist Pliny (in his Natural History, Book xxviii, Chapter 7) tells us that "if you have wounded a man and are sorry for it, you have only to spit on the hand that gave the wound, and the pain of the sufferer will be instantly alleviated."
