but who are some more modern explorers who took much land and made history

Neither Hitler nor Napoleon were explorers. They only sought to invade known regions. In fact, by their times there was very little of the world remaining to be explored (except parts of Africa, Australia anf Antartica in Napoleon's day)

Marco Polo was a great explorer he paved the way to what we call the Far East (China, the Silk Road etc). But he was no conquerer.

Columbus was a great explorer and so was Roald Amundsen and many more.

I think Hannibal was a conquerer He is the Carthaginian general Hannibal (247-182 BCE) who was one of the greatest military leaders in history. But I doubt if you can call him explorer.

He conquered Istanbul in 1453 and ended Eastern Byzantium.
