You always hear the question "Hey whats up?"
as a greeting, of course you will expect to hear a comeback of the other saying "not much".
the thing i dont like is the word "not much" i mean c'mon, not much means that nothing is really happening, if i say that i feel weird because i know my heart is beating, and lots will happen in life.
if a fire fighter walks up to the victom of the house owner whose building burned down, and the fireman said whats up?
obviously the only common response would be not much.
doesnt it ever bother you that its such a common greeting that it can get on your nerves?

Man...never really thought of it that way. I guess its kind of like if someone told you, "Knock, Knock", you are obviously going to say "Whose there?". I feel ya. Whats really interesting is that you think of things that way.

If a firefighter comes up to you and says, "Whats up?" after witnessing your house burn down, I think that its legal to respond by yelling, "Are you an idiot?" and choking him until he stops breathing.

I say "not much " or "nothing" most of the time, because most people who see you during the day and ask "whats up?" dont really care whats up with you and i dont really care to let them in on my whole life story for the day. i have things to do and places to be. conversing with everyone who says "whats up?" would be a whole day in itself and nothing that i had to do would get done. In my opinion, "Nothing much" or "nothing" is a curt yet polite answer to a mundane and uncaring question. Usually people who care about you and you care about dont just say "Hey Whats up?" Lots of times you say hi first.

It seems that the banality of life has made it a default answer. I like doing the opposite by telling my friends or co-workers really strange descriptions of how I feel, and its fun for them because they get it somehow.

It's so over-used that I don't answer it anymore. It's very shallow and needs to be eliminated from our culture.
Are you gonna tell them, or should I?
