Just about everyone, conservative & liberal alike seems to agree that professional politicians are liars, hypocrites, bribe-takers & thieves, or some variation of such suspicious characters. Why wouldn't they be?
Most people agree the system is broken & way out of control.
Many on both sides favor term limits,..yet they elect this same breed time & again as if there's no choice. & they never fix a thing. Things get worse in fact.

50% of the people don't vote at all because of it!!
That's how bad its gotten.

So why not elect the most intelligent creative successful thinkers among us to run the show?
Why not give them a chance?
Can they do worse?
Let them direct the professional bureaucracy.
Mightn't the smartest people have a lot of good ideas?

Many think Reagan, actor/artist. was the best president ever.

These are the people who dictators like Stalin, Mao & Hitler killed because they felt them a rival & threat to their power & propaganda. What does that tell you?

It would be great if we could get more creative thinkers instead of lawyers turned politician. I have always thought that the really awesome businesspeople like Ross Perot and Bill Gates should be in charge of commerce; that Dennis Miller and Jon Stewart probably know more about what is really going on in the world than most of the people in the House or Senate or Cabinet; that the creative minds that came up with things like the Internet, YouTube, and Ebay would be great at finding solutions; and that the best people to overhaul the schools would be a group of teachers from the most successful school systems. The only problem is that a government job doesn't pay much, and it mostly attracts ego-centric individuals over real public servants.

I think President Reagan was incredible at bringing back a patriotic feeling among Americans after Vietnam; his speeches always brought me to tears and laughter and really made me want to do something good for the country; he was more real to me than any other politician in my lifetime.

One thing that is important to remember is that not everyone in public office is the same. There are still very genuine, honest people in office. One of my State Representatives in the Michigan government is a shining example....John Espinoza. He is a self made man who has lived the American Dream, who served in the military, taught in schools, was a police officer, a county commissioner, and a fine family man. He is only the third Democrat in the history of our county to be elected to any public office, and the first two were FDR (the third time) and JFK. When you find a person like this, support them with all your might....do whatever you can to let people know, and get them out to vote. Keep in touch with your representatives and let them know what you feel are pressing issues. Write real letters, not just forwarding some prewritten political action group crap. It is up to us as Americans to not only vote, but also stay involved in the process.

Maybe we should have a fourth arm of the government, with individuals chosen the same way one is chosen for jury duty. Lawmakers would have to make their case to these "Joe Schmoes" to get any thing passed. To prevent any undue influence on these folks, they could be sequestered. Also, the lawmakers could present different versions of a bill (kind of like how prosecutors sometimes present a variety of charges to a jury), and the Joe Shmoes could select the version that is best for the American people.

I know it would never happen. I'm just loopy, no coffee yet this A.M.

Yes, they could do much worse. The president has to manage as much as he has to think. I want someone who can delegate to specialists and get the best out of them, a leader. This is not to say that leading and thinking are mutually exclusive, but given the choice I will absolutely choose the former and know that the bureaucrats are the latter. 50% of people don't vote, for all numbers of reasons. Some may think the system is broken and some may just not care. For those that don't care, their decision not to vote could be an indication that the system is not in as much dissarray as you suggest. Finally that Stalin thing... I can't wrap my mind around what you are trying to tell me. Are you saying that people who voted for Reagan are similar to anti-communists and anti-fascists? Could it be that some voted for Reagan because they didn't want Mondale to raise taxes? Again, I don't think we can assume one source of inspiration.

Getting some teachers in there might be a good thing. Maybe some more blue collar people. Hell maybe we should ban all lawyers and anyone from a family making over 500K from government office and see what happens. Things might improve if we get people in office who actually know what it is to work for a living.
