Americas support of Israel makes the Zionist state so powerfull militarily that the issue of reaching a settlement with the Palestinians is not seen as a matter of urgency and so the resistance continues and fuels worldwide hatred and condemnation as well as being one the main drivers of terrorism. Israeli politicians are handcuffed to hardline policies that maintain the status quo by the very fact that the status quo is seen as sustainable. Support for Israel in the U.S. is very well organised and funded and to some extent this gives Israel control over American foriegn policy leaving American politicians hand cuffed to the hardline status quo as well. Is there a way to break the deadlock before the next 911 and the next and the next.

Ivri_anoki: the polarity of the control is surely secondary to considerations of how to break the cycle that chains politicians from Israel and America to the status quo. The idea that the status quo can just be maintained indefinitely is the most dangerous illusion. The proliferation of nuclear weapons may be undesirable but it is also inevitable as is the technology that shrinks these weapons to the extent where there is no defence against them. The situation between Israel and the Palestinians is one that attract so much sympathy from other Arab countries that the funds are available for the Palestinian resistance to acquire these weapons and they will unless the motivating factors are resolved.

America, whether we should or not, has always supported Israel financially and politically. Sometimes we've been right to do so. Lots of times, we've been wrong. On the other hand, Israel is a bad enemy to have. I would be happy if we distanced ourselves a bit, or used our influence to create a real peace, not a false one which serves only Israel. The people of Israel and the Palestinians are weary of war, but the politicians just keep chattering on with threats.

You talk about status quo?

If only were that the case!

The truth of the matter is that Israel got to this stage precisely because some Israeli politicians decided to break the status quo. Before the Oslo peace accords and the first intifada, things were actually realtively peaceful. Now, because someone decided to pursue that course of action, it resulted in the Palestinian Arabs having a quasi autonomous area ruled first by Fatah (a "moderate" terror organization) and then by Hamas (a "extreme" terror organization).
The result? Both Israel and the Arabs are worse off.

The truth of the matter is that peace talks are sustainable only if your peace partner is trustworthy and has no blood on its hands. Israel made that mistake with Arafat. Hopefully, it won't do it again.

Not when the Democratic Party names the president of AIPAC as the Chairmen of the DNC,

Like the Democrats did back in 1997.

But you did notice, under Bush, for the first time ever, Israel dismantled settlements.

And withdrew from Gaza.

That's a start.

Of course, it doesn't help. when the Palestinians reject Israel's right to exist for 60 years.

Then all of a sudden, realizing that the Arabs cannot defeat Israel militarily.

Decide, well maybe we can live with the borders the way they were 40 years ago.

They just arbitrarily picked a date, Why not choose the border situation after the 1973 war ?

And untill the Palestinians give up the right of return, there will never be peace.

Israel is never going to allow millions of palestinians to move into Israel and turn Israel into a palestinian state.

Israel is never going to give up the right to the wailing wall and temple mound.

Not when the Arabs blocked all Israeli access to that site, when the arabs controlled it.

America is a big country ruled by lobbyist and spacial interests groups. The Israeli lobby is one of the most power full lobby in Washington. No government officials dare to criticize Israel while in office a good example for that is former president Carter.
Read what Israeli PM said on a live radio talk-show about the issue."Every time we do something you tell me America will do this and will do that . . . I want to tell you something very clear: Don't worry about American pressure on Israel. We, the Jewish people, control America, and the Americans know it." -- Ariel Sharon to Shimon Peres, October 3rd, 2001, as reported on Kol Yisrael" voice of Israel"

To summarize your position, you hold that the Jews control America.

Now while you may not be an anti-Semite, you are repeating their false mantra.

No, Israel does not control America. Quite the contrary, the United States, as represented by Condi, controls Israel to an unprecedented degree.

This must stop.

I think it is absolutely true that we are helping the Israelis, but I do not think that it has led to terrorism. I think people always want to understand why bad things happen, but the fact is that a lot of the world hates, and has ever since we became the world's leading super power.

I recommend the book "The Ugly American" of the 1950's. It is all about how the world hates America.

Also, one of JFK's platforms was restoring American prestige in the world.

There is no good reason that people hate us, and there is no single policy that we can change to make it better.

It is part of the American way. Fund and support the little guy with weapons and billions of dollars until they get arrogant and out of control. Then after they tell us where to go, Spend even more billions of dollars to get rid of them.
