I'm a former metalhead from the 80's. Back then if you could play a killer solo, you were a kickass band. Now only a few bands try solo's. It shows that there aren't that much original talent out there.

Cause they can't play guitar! There is no talent in today's music anymore. Try Porcupine Tree, they're one of the only modern band that still have guitar solos (Strip the Soul, Buying New Soul, Sound of Muzak) and sound good.

Because guitar solos require the ability to do more than strum a few basic bar chords, which appears to be well beyond the abilities of most of the "artists" that have come out within the past 10-15 years. Today's overproduced music is all pose-y, whiney, hypersexualized, overcommercialized crap that tries to masquerade as "deep and meaningful" when it's really just packaged to sell quickly and be forgotten to make room for the next round of crap.

I miss 80's hair metal guitar solos, too.

There's still solos to be found even in new stuff, Dragonforce sounds like the stuff on Shrapnel Records in the 80's, Shadows Fall has some killer ones, Trivium lays some good ones down too. And let's not forget that Zakk Wylde and Dave Mustaine are still playing killer stuff.

Rock bands don't play solos because,
First: They can't
Second: Sometimes the songs don't need a solo
Last: Solos have also gone out of style, look at weezer for instance, before they use to just rock out, now they hold back.

80's metal \m/

My guess as to why new rock bands don't play solo's anymore is probably because it doesn't suit the "now" style of music and if they don't write in solos. They don't have to play for long, they can dish out more lesser quality songs and that way more albums can come out. Thus, allowing to make more money rather than further their capability.

Because they all suck. I can play most emo guitar stuff on my bass, including chords (using Stanley Clarke's finger technique where he strikes the strings with the back of his fingernails by opening them). It's stupid easy. By the way, you're an 80's metalhead, tell me, do a lot of these emo bands just sound like watered down talentless Iron Maiden wannabes?

They would probably cut the solo out on the radio anyway to make an originally 4 minute song last 2 minutes and 50 seconds.

New Rock bands don't play guitar solo's because they can't. They're just not good enough. Back in the 80's it was pretty much manditory.

Actually I think it is a fad that goes in and out of style, kind of like using the word 'The' in front of the band name. Until recently it was passe. Now you hear of bands like The Killers, so maybe it will come back, too.
