I have 1 gig of RAM for my gaming computer

need to stop running unnecesary programs like Itunes
only run the game

How long since defrag and scan disk? that imrpoves speed, too

START
My Computer
right click – Local Disc (C:)
left click – Properties
choose 2nd tab – TOOLS
error Checking – click CHECK NOW
put check marks in both boxes
click – START (NOW- you will probably get a message saying you need to restart your computer – because this program wants to be the BOSS! – click YES)

also from here
Defragmentation – click Defrag Now
Click – Analyze – within seconds it will tell you if you need to - - if it says you are ok – FINE – if not – defrag – this will put
files back into closer proximity to make them work faster – when complete

restart your computer to make Scan Disk work

Best of Luck

On top of all the other answers, here is a thought. Is your C drive compressed?? I have an older system and I compressed the main hard drive and it was slow to load and start no matter how many programs I turned off and fragmented the drive. Then I reinstalled XP and did not compress the drive. (Bought more storage) And now my computer runs faster. It's not a super improvement b/c it was never that fast in the first place. But if you are trying to run big files from a compressed drive and on a older system, it will take longer b/c the CPU has to uncompressed the files before they can be used and then it has to compress them again. Also average RAM for most programs today is 512MB. If you have less then that, you are going back to that compressed hard drive more often and soon you are going to see a slow down somewhere.

Of course all of this only means anything if the C drive is compressed

If you are trying to play any modern games, you definitely need to upgrade your RAM. I have 1000 MB and want to upgrade to 2000MB. Also, depending on how old your system is, the processor may not be suitable to playing the hot games of today. The only fix for that would be to replace the processor too, and if thats the case it would probably be better to replace the computer.
One other thing you can do, is empty the recycle bin, delete temp internet files and defrag your system. Defragmentation is in system tools. It's easy top do, if you have never done it before.

You need 2GB of RAM for a decent gaming machine, anything less than that and the other crappy pereipheral programs that windoze runs will lag it up quite a bit, even if all other apps are closed.

You also need to check into the video card you have, as well as the spped of your hard drive.
