The rest of the world is caught up to the substance of basketball, where as American just kept going flash. The primary reason is NBA rules vs international rules.

First thing is the restricted zone in the NBA. The restricted zone is that circle under the goal where an offensive charge becomes a defensive block. There is no such rule in the international rules. Sure, it's more flashy lay-ups and awesome dunks. But if you watched the FIBA and Olympics, remember Americans being called for offensive fouls more then being called for defensive fouls? Team USA is like totally dead in the paint when they played against Spain, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Greece, and even Lithuania.

The second is traveling. Allen Iverson turned the ball over like 6 or 7 times a game because of traveling. Even Tim Duncan turns over 4 times because of traveling. Why? Because in the NBA, for all the flash and glory, the rules allow to move you pivot foot before the dribble, so you have a running start to get into the paint. If USA wants to play internationally, they somehow have to forget years of playing NBA style. This is one reason why I applauded Coach K's decision not to invite Iverson, who not only has the pivot foot problem and also the often NBA overlooked palming problem.

And third is defense. OK, Team USA sucked in the Olympics. Carlos Arroyo scored like 60 points on them in the first game! USA also sucked in the preliminaries. And in FIBA, Arroyo once again scored 60 points, but in the end USA barely outlasted against them. The only player playing defense was Tim Duncan, where as the other players are playing "my offense is my defense." It's not until Shane Battier came, when USA played defense. In FIBA, USA barely lost one game to Greece. If you just break down that game and ask why USA lost, USA played well defensively, but they lost because of that prior reasons I mentioned, offensive charging into the paint and traveling.

Most of the world is caught up in terms of scoring and running. And they know if they are out-sized, they have to play great defense. NBA in general now wants to run and gun like the Phoenix Suns to be less "boring." The original dream team had well-balanced players like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Patrick Ewing. Now, USA got Carmelo Anthony, Lebron James, and Chris Bosh. Have you seen their defense? Lebron is just OK, he's not a defensive player like Magic and Jordan were. And Carmelo and Chris play no defense. I see USA falling like Canada if the NBA keep on taking this route. NBA needs to suck it up and play the international rules!

One thing is chemistry. USA team were a bunch of superstars put together and most of them prefers one on one play offensively which won't cut in international basketball. Most of the time, what wingmen does are drive to the hoop and see what happens. While europeans has a better play in basketball. They play the passing game and they don't look like they have superstars. Just players that know how to play together. He who is open takes the shot. Not much flashy dunks or fancy passes that most of the time converts to turnovers. European players values the basketball fundamentals more than one on one play.

This is a major proof that team play is far more superior than individual play.

They are team players so throw that theory out of the window. They are tired. Basketball ends in June after about 100 games for some players and the season starts in October. So basically they are playing every month because they start playing in August.

3 Reasons:

1. Foreign teams or foreign players, for that matter, have caught up with the US in terms of talent, skill and athletic ability;

2. NBA style of play no longer works in the international game; which brings us to

3. Lack of familiarity by these NBA superstars with FIBA (international) rules.

If I may add, the international game focuses on sharp outside shooting and endless crisp passing 'til you get to the open man. Isolation plays, pick and rolls and even the triangle offense won't work because of the zone. Zone defense is the norm in international play. It is therefore important that all 5 players on the floor can shoot, including the center. You don't need a dominant big man like Shaq. You need a big guy who can shoot like Nowitzki. That's why Tim Duncan was ineffective in '04 while Dirk and guys like Oberto thrived.

America used to have the best basketball players but now all the european countries have caught up...also the rules that international basketball is played too is different to n ba rules. The game tempo is just different, and whilst nba rules favour 1 on 1 basketball where players can showoff their abilities, with international teams they will just run a zone on america.

Because today's pros are a bunch of individualists who are highly overpaid crybabies. Whoever picks the teams for international competition should select those who are good in assists and rebounding and leave the high scorers at home. Outside of Tim Duncan, I don't know of any that I'd want on my team.

The players that are put on the teams are all stars. They are used to being the go to guy in types of situations as you've seen in the past.

The rules are different and the europeans are getting better. The europeans love to shoot the perimeter shot. In the olympics, our only perimeter shooter was carmelo anthony. Europeans have centers that can shoot the three, like Okur and Nowitzki (in the NBA he is a PF, but in Germany he was a center).

One thing I might add here, the NBA rules allowed to move your pivot foot before dribbling on the perimeter but that's not allowed in FIBA.

So that American perimeter player had a hard time adjusting to this rule. One American player that I know had already adjusted to this rule is D Wade.
