Although I feel that lies do have a varing severity...the effect on a relationship is still the same...it either chips tiny dents or big huge craters out of the trust & open communication that are foundations to any relationship...

stay honest, keep a solid foundation...kinda makes sense in my book...

This is a gray area. "White" lies can pretty much be ignored most of the time. "Does this dress make my butt look big?" "Of course, not dear. You have such a sexy figure.". See what I mean.

Then there's: "Where were you last night?" "Helping Joe fix his car" (when he was really at the bar scoping chicks).

A lie is in the eye of the beholder, I guess. Some things you've just got to let go because you can't argue about everything, but you can get an overall picture of the person in question. If you get that "funny" feeling that it is an untruth, it probably is.

no, because you can classify a lie at different rating
mild - meaning the truth would not matter
medium - meaning the truth would matter and might have a physical or emotional effect
high - meaning the truth would make an drastic change, a need to know basis. emotional or physical wound.
life is a time limit, you could effect a person's life by a lie or a lie could be harmless

No. I would gage this by how I felt after telling a specific lie.
For example:
1. I lied to a stranger about my age. This doesn't bother me.
2. I lied to my boss about a deadline. This bother's me much more.
I do not feel my lie about my age affected the stranger mentioned above as much as the lie about the deadline would affect my boss.

Please elaborate. If you ask your boyfriend if those pants make your butt look big and he lies and says no do you think that is the same as lying to you about where he has been. No some lies are expected, like answering the "does my butt look big" question while others are harmful.

No. Some lies are to save someones feelings like if someone asks if they look fat in something. If the truth is yes but you answer no then that is to save their feelings. But if you lie to gain something for yourself then that is worse. Like if someone asks if you are single and you say you are when you are married then that is bad. If you cheat and you lie about it that is one of the worst.

I believe they are equally severe, because if someone catches you (not you specifically) in a small lie, then they will wonder if they can trust your word in other circumstanes, and trust is broken.

No. Some are meaningless and really dont hurt, others are devestating. But if you are willing to lie about something small, usually you are willing to lie about something big.
