I think you should go to the doc if nothing else to get some Xrays to get an actual diagnosis and detailed account of the damage done. There is a lot going on in the tailbone area, you could have affected your spine, your pelvis, it could be muscular, nerve damage, or any number of other things, including organ damage, especially if it was a high impact thump that jarred your whole body. Imagine if your ribs were out and threatening to puncture a lung or something? You might not have a pain indicator of all your injuries, especially if your butt hurts so much that it is a distraction to other problems.
After you know, a chiro is a great resource if you need rehab but you owe it to yourself to know if you have a fracture, a sprain, torn connective tissues, swelling, pinched nerves, etc. A doc, Xrays, and other mobility tests are likely needed to tell you these things, and then you will be more educated how to treat the problem...to say there's nothing you can do without knowing what is wrong is just negligent on your part.
So...go to the doc, find out what they say is wrong, and at least consider what is needed. There may be more or less invasive measures you can take, and of course you want to try the less invasive first. Things like massage, electro stimulation, water therapy, ice and heat, can help you avoid bedrest and surgery.
One thing to ease your mind is that this is going to be a painful thing, no matter what, so don't worry that you are still in pain. Even if it is "just" a bruised bone, it will hurt like hell.

Sounds like a broken tail bone. I know a bunch of people who have broken theirs, and all of them did it by falling on the stairs and landing on their bottoms.
The first person I knew who had that happen went to a doctor, and it was a good thing, because the broken piece had moved pretty far away from her spine, and they had to monitor it to make sure it didn't harm any nerves or anything like that. But her pain was also so bad she literally couldn't move, so I doubt that if that is your problem, yours is as serious as hers. The only other thing the doctor was able to do for her is give her pain medication and instructions on how to move so it could heal. Eventually, several years later when she was married and pregnant, they gave her a local and went in and removed the floating piece so it wouldn't interfere with anything while she was pregnant.
If the pain is bothering you a lot, go in and have it checked. Like broken ribs, there isn't much a doctor can do except help you with the pain.

anytime you have a nasty fall you should be checked out by a dr.
you could have fractured your tailbone (for which there is no treatment other than pain meds) but more so-you could have knocked your spine or back out of alignment which can cause you problems later on (slipped discs, nerve pain, etc).
having everything checked out will give you peace of mind and the dr can also prescribe pain meds and prescription strength anti-inflammatory to help out with any muscle issues.
hope you feel better soon

well if you did go to a doctor, you would either find out that you had a pelvic, coccyx or sacral fracture (possible). coccyx and sacral can't do anything about. and pelvic...basically can't do anything about. so the doctor will give you an inflatable donut to sit on and some AWESOME pain meds. Probably hydro/oxy codone. i prefer hydrocodone(vicodin). I LOVE VICODIN

Before going to the doctor, i suggest you have it x-ray, so that you will know if there is a disalignment of your bone or any fracture.
