People want fame as they think it is synonymous with success, happiness and being wealthy, with no cares it the world (the American dream).
For the fortuante few that reach that status, they can find it becomes a nightmare when they can't go to the grocery store or the bathroom without worrying someone is watching them, going to write a story about it or take a picture of them then ask for an autograph.
Cameron Diaz started out as being a media whore and even "changed her top" in public to get publicty for a restaurant she owned, until about 8-10 years later she got tired of it when she was escorting an elderly relative to a car the media nearly knocked the relative down to get a picture of her and she got in their face about it and has not been fan or media friendly since then. Can you blame her?

I don't think they see the big picture - they only think of being popular and having lots of money. It's all about being accepted by society. Unfortunately this is the message that the world is putting out there.
On the other hand, some kids really do have talent and passion for movies or music and they should be motivated to enhance these talents - I just don't agree with fame at an early age. The younger children tend to get lost and too caught up in the fame and end up not knowing who they are.
Conclusion: Fame = money = acceptance/popularity

people want fame because they want to be well known, feel important, be recognized, feel loved, have the ability to have a high social status allowing them to attract better mates. i dont really think anyone wants to be famous to the point of britney spears, paris hilton, or tom cruise. that is overboard famous in my opinion

Because they are insecure. They need to feel loved and think that they will find it by being famous. How sad.

Because they feel worthless, and they feel that being famous validates their existence.
