The first difference between a crocodile and an alligator is that they are from different families of crocodilians. Crocodiles are from the crocodylidae family, while alligators and caiman are from the alligatoridae family.
In terms of physical differences the easiest way to tell the difference between the two is that a crocodile has a very long, narrow, V-shaped snout, while the alligator's snout is wider and U-shaped. Because of the wide snout of the alligator it packs more crushing power to eat prey like turtles that constitute part of its diet. The narrow crocodile snout, although still very powerful, is not really suited for prey like turtles but is very versatile for fish and mammals.
Another physical difference between the crocodile and the alligator is that the crocodile's upper and lower jaws are nearly the same width, so the teeth are exposed all along the jaw line in an interlocking pattern, even when the mouth is closed. They also have an enormous 4th tooth on the lower jaw that is accommodated by depressions in the upper jaw just behind the nostrils.
An alligator, on the other hand, has a wider upper jaw, so when its mouth is closed the teeth in the lower jaw fit into sockets of the upper jaw, hidden from view. Only the teeth of the upper jaw are exposed along the lower jaw line. Even the enormous 4th tooth on the bottom jaw, which is exposed in a crocodile, is hidden in the alligator.
Another physical difference is that crocodiles have a lighter olive brown coloration, while alligators appear blackish. Alligators also prefer freshwater while crocodiles like brackish water and sometimes even ocean.

alligator: charcoal grey to black with yellow to white banding (when present); slight overbite, teeth in lower jaw fit into sockets in upper jaw; almond coloration inside mouth; golden eyes; osteoderms (scutes or "bumps" on their back) in straight rows, confined strictly to back very few on sides.
crocodile: (usually) olive drab to golden khaki with black markings; teeth mesh, upper and lower teeth visible with mouth closed, most prominently the fourth tooth from the front on the lower jaw, in some species this will stick up -above- the upper jaw; inside of mouth orangeish; green eyes; scutes more pronounced and less orderly, in some species, they even occur into the belly skin.
Crocs have more webbing between their back toes, and if you compare the tail "fins" on alligators and crocodiles, you will see that alligators resemble more of a '55 Chevy, and crocs look more like a '57.
Now, while it is generally accepted that alligators are a freshwater animal, do not assume that they do not, or cannot, or will not go into salt water. Crocs have a gland in their mouth to excrete salt, alligators lack this gland and so must retreat to fresh water on a regular basis to rinse the salt from their system. Alligators can and will and do go not only into brackish water, but also occasionally range out into the ocean.

The alligator is what you will find in the united states, this animal has a bigger head and diffrent coloring then the croc does. But other then the diffrent bodies, the croc is very fast and is very aggresive. The alligator is slow to move and is even slower to attack. The croc is the animal to fear and repect here for sure.

Well, These both are reptiles and also belongs to same order, the order crocodelia but there genus is different basically. The classification and naming of all living things depends on there morphlogical as well physiological differnces.
If we go for the appearent differences, we are able to see the differnce in their snout, body sizes, number of teeth, etc.
There are also some differnces in physiology, but doesnot mean that they donot have any similarity at all. Obviously they have similarities and because of them they are grouped together in same order

What is a corc?
Seriously, tho, alligators live in fresh water, and most crocodiles live in saltier water.
Also, crocodiles are more aggressive.
