If you appear in court to testify, you can ask the judge or bailiff ahead of time to leave the, "so help me God" out of the oath. You are simply asked "Do you promise to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?"

It depends on the courtroom. In some, they have a Webster's Dictionary and simply say to swear with your hand on the book.

For children, it is different. They are asked if they know the difference between the truth and a lie and if they are going to tell the truth.

I believe that you can swear on any book you wish. It is called freedom of religion. If you choose to swear on the Yellow Pages, I think that is allowable. The most important thing is that you tell the truth in court.

Well, are they going to ask you what you're religion is, because some judges are racist, and this would only prove to be against you in your case, right?
