It depends on what kind of university you're applying to. Ivy League and their ilk put a lot of emphasis on extracurriculars, state colleges don't, really. What's most important is your GPA, then ACT/SAT scores, then after that your extracurriculars, which can include work. In fact they really like students that worked in high school = shows inititative and determination or some such bs.

It depends on the University. A sport shows you to be well rounded and if you excelled, all the better. It is the same situation with volunteer work. It looks good when applying for scholarships and other campus organizations.

Volunteer work looks better than athletics unless you're trying to get a scholarship to play a sport in college. You can still get in without either one, though to most state schools. The more elite, private schools, you'll need more than just grades so volunteer work will definitely look good.

Most look at well rounded kids so sports isn't as important academics and community service. Athletics is only on thing Colleges look for alon with academics and Community service because they want well rounded students,
