Is it important what other people think of you?

I was just having a discussion with my friend about self-image, and she believes that it's only important what YOU think of yourself, rather than what other people think of you. I believe that while what you think of yourself holds very high importance, in today's world it's unavoidable not to worry about what other people think of you.
Any thoughts?

It really should only matter to you what you think of yourself, but for some reason I want to know what others think of me. I don't know if it's paranoia or what, but I just want people to like me. You know what a good feeling it is to get a best answer, or a thumbs up, or even being added to someone's contact list. That makes me feel good anyway.

I don't worry what other people think of me. I am who I am. I am not going to change myself to make anyone else happy. Then I wouldn't be true to myself. When the day is done you have one person to live with and that is yourself. If you are happy with who you are and you can look in the mirror then why worry about what other people think. You are never going to please everyone. Someone will always think bad of you so why worry about something that you can never achieve (the total acceptance of mankind).

I dont care what people think of me. Im about 250 lbs built like a take, Im a bodybuilder, and ill compete at about 230-235 lbs on stage completely shreaded. I hear people all the time saying that the way I look is gross, that im too big. But i could care less. Im still gonna hit the gym twice a day, a get bigger, just like my idol KING RONNIE COLEMAN, 300lbs on stage completely shreaded thats where i want to be

For your own self image it is not. But we don't live in a world were self image hires us or chooses a life mate. Almost everything we do is connected to everyone else.
But you can choose not to worry about it since worry does not affect anything. Only actions change the world around us

No. It is not important what other people think of you, as long as you feel good about yourself, isn't that all that matters? What other people think is their opinions. Your not acting like someone else just for them. You should be yourself, to just live your life, right?

I like myself as a person; so somkeone else's opinion of me doesn't really matter to me. What does bother me is that when people have a (false) preconceived notion of me and they treat me based on that idea versus getting to know me.

It is possible in today's society to not worry about others' opinions of you. How you choose to prioritze your time and mental activity is totally up to you.

I do agree that what YOU think about yourself is the most important thing. It is only important what a person thinks of you if they're interviewing you for a job, or on a first date, or meeting someone for the first time. But strangers? I try not to care what they think about me, but I can't help but be self conscious most of the time.

You are so right.. In fantasy, yeah you can only think of yourself and not mind others but in reality, you can't just do that.. Like, you can't just wear gown in the beach.. others will think you're crazy and ridiculous.. so we should stick to what reality bites but I'm not saying you should worry much about what they think.. You just need to mutualize your views and others'.

It doesn't matter what other people think of you. You have to be happy with yourself. But you should always be kind and helpful to other people. And be friendly, not snobby. Remember the rule, do unto others as you would have them do unto you!

Not for your spiritaul sake. Its what you think about yourself that counts. Contradictory, depending on what you wna't to do, opinions might count. Ex: if you are running for an office or a position it counts because it comes down to what people say about you.
