I was just having a discussion with my friend about self-image, and she believes that it's only important what YOU think of yourself, rather than what other people think of you. I believe that while what you think of yourself holds very high importance, in today's world it's unavoidable not to worry about what other people think of you.
Any thoughts?

It can't be entirely disregarded, since we have to interact with other people on a daily basis just to survive. Certainly not provoking negative responses and opinions is a necessary skill for human beings in a society.

But in the grand scheme of things, it matters less what others think of you- ultimately you've got to live with yourself and if you're simply keeping up appearances and trying to satisfy others, you won't be happy. And for every human being happiness is the goal, no matter what brings it.

So wouldn't call it unimportant, just less important if you're comparing the two.

well i would say it is important that you and other people see yourself.
like sth in the middle. because if you were to be liked to the other people i believe that at some point you would become a pushover. but on the other hand you cant just act as you please there are rules in the society, if you dont will to obey these rules well then this means that you dont respect your house which i mean the society and when they dont respect you then you cant find a job you dont have a friend. i mean would anyone want to be with you if you did whatever you want?
so like take the philosophy of the ancient Greeks.
you should have a limit to everything.
to make the long story short have a life of yours but also respect the people around you.

i agree that it is more important to know and believe about your self because there are days when public opining poll just do not add up to the person that know and with out having all the facts ,they would express to you how disappointed they are because you made in there eyes sight some errors but you have a good reason , but i believe that there are far too many persons who are suffering from low self esteem and are living for the approval of the public

I agree with you. If you say you don't care what anybody thinks, you are lying. People long for approval, acceptance and unconditional love. I'm one of those people that appears not to care what people think. I act the same way around everyone and I don't let what people might think control my actions, who I talk to, or even what I say. People are always asking me how it is that I don't care what people think. They're crazy. Of course I care, I just hide it better. Balance is the key to most things. Care, but don't care too much.
