Because we are giving our money out to other countries, and spending BILLIONS on this stupid war.
Basically, because the money that would be used to care for its citizens goes somewhere else.

The United States can afford to take care of its citizens.
But see, here in the United States, we don't think the government should take care of the citizens. We aren't helpless waifs needing a nanny. We can take care of ourselves.
We like government to get out of the way and let us go on about our business.

In what exact way? Give you all your meals, bathe you, all meds and Docs for free, nice home in the burbs, Cradle to grave or just the occasional handout?
Why cant the vast majority take care of themselves? Who said the US is supposed to do all these things?
You think there are NO social programs now? We ( those that take care of ourselves) support a lot of those that dont care for themselves. Then we send money all around the world, then we try to get everyone in the world to come here for free and get all the bennies.
Guess we are just a rotten no account sin-full greedy country and our government just dont love us no more.

Where the f*** do you live? Our welfare state is disgraceful. All over people are producing children with no other plan of support, forever, than welfare. The US wrongly has made welfare an "entitlement" program and no one should be entitled to free shelter, free food, free education for their children, free medical care, and on and on. Except it is not free to me, who has worked all my life to provide those things for my children, and for all the other deadbeats' children through the taxes I pay.
I don't want to support all these citizens and to add to the insult I am now providing many of the same services to illegal immigrants, not to mention legal immigrants; and before you think I don't know what I am talking about I worked for many years at the welfare agency of a very large state and I know.
Someone start the revolution, please! I'll man a barricade.

Because our government is incompetent and unwilling to be fiscally responsible.
Both parties, Republican and Democrat, are at fault.
So many folks holler about the Democrats being "tax and spend" types, almost no on thinks to holler about the Republicans "borrow and spend" ways. Either way is bankrupting our nation.
Edit: It is a shame that this country has not made a priority to take care of it's own citizens first, including national health care. The truth is that there is so much money wasted that soon we will not be able to sustian some very basic services.

Quite simply, the government does not want the responsibility anymore. It would rather susidize companies that lay off people here, putting them into the state burden programs, just so those companies can build plants in other countries.

Its not just happening in the U.S. Its happening around the world. You are a country of 200 million people so someone will be left out. Welcome to the real world.
You must take care of yourself. Why must you wait for the government or charity foundations to take care of you?

Bush/Cheney would rather pass large, multibillion dollar military budgets to throw at a war that is baseless, is in its last throes, that is unwinnable, instead of shifting his priorities to the poor and needy in this country. The poverty level always increases under a Republican administration. His is no exception. It is a matter of priorities. His solution is to put the burden of faith-based charities on the backs of churches, but that excludes athiests, agnostics, and other citizens who don't actively worship or belong to a church group. The US can take care of its citizens, but would rather give free education and free medical care to illegal immigrants. This is a complex problem that requires complex solutions. Bush/Cheney, again, has fallen short.

I don't and never had expected the US to take care of me or my family. We work hard and take care of our self, its called pride and the sense of achievement. Then we have the deadbeats that think the world owes them a living.

WE are the U.S. government. We pay the bills. Why do we owe those who don't want to work for it medical care?
When did we agree to become a socialist nation? I didn't!
One by one socialists are trying to undermine our nation if we don't give them what they want (another socialist system).
I'm a patriot, not a socialist. We could afford it. But we prize independence and hard work more than stealing from everyone to pay for those who don't want to work.
And here's the kicker: The reason prices go up in an uncontrolled manner in medicine is because we are removing competition. Medical offices KNOW they will get paid because businesses have social medicine, signing up whole groups so that everyone pays for everyone else's medicine. Since they know they WILL get the money, there is no incentive for NOT raising the prices. Who are they competing against?
If we socialize medicine, the price to our country will be astronomical. That will require government controls on price. That will spread to other businesses that support the medical industry. That will result in a socialist state (no competition, set prices, everyone's needs met according to their needs, each person working according to their ability, etc.)
Not me.

Why can't they take care of themselves? Get government out of the way so they can do that.
