HOW? There are approx. 3million persons in US prisons. That is about 1% of the population. All types of physicl and mental ailments are present in this population and likely in greater frequency than in the general population due to lifestyle and risktaking behaviours common to individuals predispossed to criminal activity. Add to that the close living conditions of these same minded individuals and you get a real mess. Prisons have been hell holes since the idea was first invented. If you want solutions..... non-confinement punishments- whipping, maiming, branding. You might also try shorter sentances in general or increased exicutions. There is no happy answer unless you'd like to ask these people to stop hurting others in the first place.

What? Explain it, please, because I'm not bouncing around websites to find out.
If it has anything to do with unfairness, attenuation of rights, mistreatment of anything or anybody; it can go on because America is not the land of the free and the home of the brave, even if someone wrote that in a song more than 100+ years ago. That is an illusion and if you don't think so, try doing something the government doesn't like, and I don't mean that it has to be anything illegal for the government not to like it.
Note: After reading some of the answers, I read the article that upset you and if you believe any of it you are way too gullible.
I don't believe any of it happened the way this obviously deranged person describes it. I wonder she had any free time between alien abductions to write about this.
Someone shot, someone knifed, beaten, raped, etc. I can believe in our prison system; happens everyday, but this particular complaint, no.
Anyway, I have little sympathy for prisoners. Very, very few are wrongly convicted. If you don't want to put yourself in the power of the legal system, don't break the law.

It's never safe to just read one side of the story. These people have an agenda and exaggerate what they want to tell you, and leave out important details which would weaken or contradict their agenda.
So take this story with a grain of salt.
However, it is certain that prisoners are mistreated. Hell, law-abiding citizens are constantly mistreated in this increasingly tyrannical country.

I think it is subversive and inappropriate to show only one side of this issue. She mentions nothing in the article of legal response and how they answered any suits against them (if there were any). She blames them, but posts nothing of their response.
This is hearsay evidence and you're spreading it as if it is fact.
That's wrong and unjust. How can THAT happen in the United States? Easily. People think nothing of undermining their country by treating people as "guilty until proved innocent".
A more unAmerican attitude I don't know of.
Show both sides, or expect a very jaded and tired audience to dismiss your arguments quickly. Every criminal under the sun was "unjustly treated".
Proof. It's simple. Show proof. Their response and the documents that show it are proof.

Prisons are bureaucratic and bureaucratic agencies tend to have instances that fall through the cracks.

But I thought the prison systems, especially in Califoria, are run by liberals....

Well, you can't say the neocons haven't warned us they wanted this kind of thing. They've been very open about it.
Which--when you think about it--answers your question.
