Need to show profile (cross cut ) also?

Use tiny plastic trees, brown colr clay for various mountains, rock and soil layers; a simple table tennis ball as core of earth, and green/blue clay for oceans..
Then use a stick as stand.

all of these ideas are good especially the styrofoam idea. I would use that with the little fake trees that you could get at a hobby shop even they have ways to make mountains, foilege, towns, oceans, and snow even as a joke you could put a mini candy cane as the north pole. your teacher may find that clever. you can get very creative with a project like this and I wish you the best of luck. I hope you use my candy cane idea. I'd do it. :-)

How about paper machet? Blow a balloon into a globe and cover it in strips of newspaper dipped in flour mixed with water. When it dries, pop the balloon, remove the rubber and paint it.

And then you could add 3-d elements of mountians and land masses, like a relief map.
