As in Gotham City being NYC, so to speak, was Metropolis supposed to be Chicago, considering Smallville where Superman was found was in Kansas.

I was always under the impression that Metropolis was also NYC, but it is quite possible the authors simply designed a city that was a composite of big cities.

There is a town in Southern Illinois that is actually called Metropolis and claims it to be the place mentioned in story. Wether or not it truly is, i could not tell you, but I don't think it was meaning chicago.

i think they had an idea of combining them. maybe they like somethings in each city. but im leaning more on chicago, more similarities.
