Any western movie originally written by Louis L'amour. One of them was "The Quick and the Dead". Totally different story from the movie of the same title starring Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman.
Try also "Django" with Franco Nero.
For a few laughs, there's "Lucky Luke" the only cowboy that can shoot faster than his shadow. Starring Terence Hill

The Cowboys was one of John Wayne's later films released in 1972. It was a very good story that differed from a lot of other westerns in the fact that it was not about the law or gunfighters. This is what wikipedia has on it:
Wil Andersen finds himself with a herd of cattle which he has to get to market before the winter sets in, but he has no men to help him. He turns to a group of young school boys as his last hope to get the job done. There is no better training for these boys than hands-on as they don't know what they are in for. They set out as schoolboys but return as Cowboys.
Stagecoach is probably one of his best early films. It was released in 1939.

I'm really not into Western movies but the one I loved was The Quick And The Dead with Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman and Leonardo DiCaprio. It's not that old though, only 12 years old. Great movie!
