A forests is an ecosystem. Forests are very important because the trees in the forests clean the air and get rid of carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas and cause of global warming.

Well... forests are more than a group of trees...
Forest have aesthetically advantages (they are beautiful). So they have recreational value.
Also, they prevent erosion, so them protect corps and soil.
They regulate the climate. Is thought that neotropical forest are like the conditioning air of the earth.
They host a lot of species (of plants, animals, fungus, etc) that potentially could help biochemist to develop new drugs.
They transport, store and "administrate" water. Water crosses from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean though Southamerican forests.
And of course, they capture carbon dioxide.

If the planet had a heart it would be the forest, that is were we find cures for disease and plants and animals that we would never get to see otherwise. They are the main source of oxygen for the planet, Carbon dioxide goes into trees and oxygen comes out. They create the rain they feed on, they are very complex Eco systems, and we couldn't survive with out them.

They provide:
Animal habitats
Oxygen
and they also affect temperature\climate.
You can start here, but expand, because wikipedia articles are frowned upon when used for research projects:

They provide oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, without them, the ozone layer will be depleted and we will probably be like the moon, without air, water and life.
