Why do we think water is essential for life in other planets, just because it is so in earth? Why cant life happen with Hydrochloric acid or sulphuric acid?

There are many speculative biologies that postulate that life is not limited to being carbon-water based only( you can check out some via the link in 'sources'), however water is the only compound that we have proof that life is linked to. We know life can be linked to water, so it is a useful way to narrow our search. It is possible that other compounds can support life, but the locations we are searching are far too remote to search everywhere for possible new-forms of life, so we must restrict the search to what we know can support lifed, rather than merely a possibility.

That would be some mean creatures. It could i guess I think the tax payers would be mad if nasa was looking for Hydrochloric acid to prove other life and they might think that if they find water that they will some day bring it to earth.

There is no reason that makes this impossible but the kind of life we want on Mars is our own, water is essential for this.

All the life we have studied requires water. While this does not necessarily mean that all life requires water, it would be a good place to start.

You're absolutely right my friend. Life may have an entirely differnet definiton and may not be made up of DNA RNA and N,O,C,H etc elements. We might not even know what to look for.

We've studied LOTS of chemistry, and LOTS of biology, under all types of conditions. We have NEVER found a life form which did not need water....
