There are many potential causes of early puberty in females. The most common cause, however, is obesity. It is believed that puberty in females is tied to body composition and that when females possess enough body fat, or body weight for that matter, they will begin menarche. The magic number in terms of weight for a young woman to begin menarche is around 100lbs. The earlier they reach 100lbs the earlier they will begin to menstruate. In the U.S. the obesity epidemic plays a major role in early menstruation.

I was always told that you get your first period when you get a certain amount of body fat. Since kids are fatter now, they will get it earlier.
