buy blocks, thats what i did. quick reaction time is key and make sure your arms are straight when your in the "set" position. stay on your fingers and bring the right mindset to the race. be confident and not intiminaded, think of yourself as a spring in a pin ball machine. thats what my school record holder in the 100 told me.

its also important to practice it over and over, you dont get better by reading things on the internet, u gotta go out and do it after you learn how.

Use your normal starting procedure as if you were in a race. Have someone give you the commands. Come out and sprint 40 meters. If you know how to start then practice staying low and not getting into an upright running position for 8 to 10 strides. You can do this 4 to 6 times at the beginning of your work out.

I agree in part with Joe's answer. Have your own set of blocks.

However, practicing with the blocks by themselves will not improve your speed. Do some weight training that involve deep knee bends, both with machines for proper calibration and free for balance.

Also work on exercises that improve the strength of you lower back and your stomach. You need to be able to push with your legs right through to your toes while at the same time bringing the opposite knee toward your chest.

Deep knee bends while holding small weights (10 to 20 lbs) in your hands will also help. Start Standing up with the weight overhead, bend at the knee and at the same time lower the weight till your hands are by your sides. Then stand up while raising the weights back to their original position. For variation, you can start with arms holding the weights outstretched to the side, then lower them as described. You can also create variety moving the outstretched arms in front of the body. Do 50 to 100 reps daily. Try the exercise fast as well as slow. This is primarily a leg exercise, so don't make the weights too heavy.

Continuing these exercises for a whole season and during the same time span, practice starts out of the blocks at least twice per week.
