No Dirk is not the best. He is a great player and contributes to his team tremendously, but he's not the best and here's the reason why:
Dirk is a 7ft PF who plays the perimeter all the time. He needs to use his height advantage over most players and learn how to post up consistently and effectively. If he does that he could be shooting in the 60% FG. But he's so content on playing the perimeter and shooting these fadeaway jumpers, he's basically got no chance to grab any offensive boards because he's always out on the perimeter, eventhough he's 7ft tall.
Another thing about him is that his defense isn't that great. To be the best you need to do it on both ends of the floor. And in that area he doesn't cut it.
The last thing about him is that he doesn't have that competitive fire. He choked in the playoffs and couldn't find a way to get his team to the next round. Being the best also means being smart on the floor and knowing how to help your team win when it counts the most.
He's a good player who is shooting a good 50% from the field this season while averaging 24 points a game and grabbing 9 rebounds, but stats doesn't tell the whole story. There are other things that the greats do that aren't recorded in numbers.

Dirk is an amazing player and very few people have the versatility that he does. He's become the model of the type of players that other teams search for (hence guys like Gargabosa and Bargnani).
But he lacks the strength and power to be a truly effective post up player like Duncan and he also hasn't proved that he can thrive under pressure. He's not the best yet, but he does have the potential to be. Right now, I'd say one of the best in the league is kobe, nash or duncan.

No, but he's excellent, and I won't give up on him.
I still don't understand why the Nash-Dirk combo was split up, as performance of any one player is dependent upon the back-up and the rest of the team. Dirk without Nash is kinda like Malone without Stockton at this point.
And, unfortunately, management and owners are responsible for trades, screwups, and a breakdown of a strong team. In spite of the fall, the team will come back and Dirk is still a talented marketable commodity that a lot of other teams would love to have.
You listening Joe and Gavin?

No this is so not a real question Dirk isn't the best because he sucked during the playoffs and to everyone he will be known as a choker who could never win the big one no matter what. You can not be suggested as the best until you you win a championship. Even though he is pretty great he is not the best because their is way better players like KOBE, NASH, K-G, Nash, Lebron, their all better and they could all beat Dirk one on one any day

No. How can the MVP not lead his team beyond the 1st round of the playoffs? Let's kick it back to last year. The Mavs choked after winning the first 2 games , then lost 4 in a row to Miami. I would pick Nash over Dirk any day.

NO!!!!!!! Dirk is so overrated it is pathetic. All he has is a fade away jumper and some half-way decent passing skills for a big man. He can't score off the dribble and he crumbles in the big game. The MVP should have went to Steve Nash like the past two years. If it wasn't for Nash the Suns would be a basement dweller.

He was nowhere when the Mavs needed him the most. Him winning the MVP doen's mean anything because he just bailed out on his team. So I'll agree with the others answer... He is the best... Choker.
